Thrown in prison for a crime he has not committed, Edmond Dantes is confined to the grim fortress of If. There he learns of a great hoard of treasure hidden on the Isle of Monte Cristo and becomes determined not only to escape but to unearth the treasure and use it to plot the destruction of the three men responsible for his incarceration. A huge popular success when it was first serialized in the 1840s, Dumas was inspired by a real-life case of wrongful imprisonment when writing his epic tale of suffering and retribution.

The book is excellent, albeit long, but has many characters in it. Readers might find it easier to watch one of the many adaptations of the story first to have some visuals to connect with the many names. I don't recommend this audiobook though, as something in the recording or mixing causes it every once in a while to become suddenly garbled and loud as if a DJ was revving the disc. Completely takes you out of the story. The reader also sometimes seems to place the wrong emotion on sentences, which makes me think of an AI voice.
