The Fourth Way

The Fourth Way is the most influential work of P. D. Ouspensky, a disciple of the Russian mystic Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff. Published in 1957, it compiles lectures, dialogues, and teachings given between 1921 and 1947, in which Ouspensky systematically presents Gurdjieff's philosophy and method for spiritual development.

The title refers to an alternative path to the three traditional ways of inner evolution: that of the fakir (mastery of the body), the monk (control of emotions), and the yogi (discipline of the mind). Ouspensky presents the Fourth Way as an integral method that can be practiced in daily life without the need for withdrawal from the world—balancing body, mind, and emotions in order to achieve full consciousness.

The book addresses fundamental themes such as the nature of man, the levels of consciousness, the struggle against mechanical life, the role of attention, and the possibility of awakening through conscious effort.

With a clear and structured style, Ouspensky offers a theoretical and practical guide that has inspired generations of spiritual seekers. It has become a classic of twentieth-century esoteric literature and an essential reference for those wishing to understand and apply the teachings of Gurdjieff.
