Guy de Maupassant föddes 1850 i Normandie, Frankrike. Maupassant räknas som en av novellkonstens stora mästare med sin sparsmakade men kärnfulla stil. En av hans mest uppmärksammade noveller är debutverket Fettpärlan. Många av Maupassants noveller skildrar hans ungdomserfarenheter från det fransk-preussiska kriget och den påföljande preussiska ockupationen av östra Frankrike. En del av hans senare novellistiska författarskap är mer att betrakta som skräcklitteratur. Stilistiskt sett passar han väl in i naturalismen, som på den tiden var starkt framväxande.
Maupassants litterära karriär tog fart när moderns familjebekant Gustave Flaubert började intressera sig för hans texter. Genom Flauberts kontakter knöts Maupassant till många kända realist- och naturalistförfattare, bl.a. Émile Zola, Ivan Turgenev och Henry James.
År 1880 publicerades Maupassants debutdiktsamling Des Vers, och under samma år även den kända novellen Boule de Suif (Fettpärlan) i en antologi med bl.a. Zola, med temat kring det fransk-preussiska kriget. När Maupassant väl debuterat var han oerhört produktiv, under den korta tid på drygt tio år som han hann verka som författare. Redan vid unga år insjuknade Maupassant i syfilis, en sjukdom som senare ledde till svåra mentala problem. Dessa återspeglas i hans senare författarskap, framför allt i skräcknovellerna om människans utsatthet.
