A woman of the new century marries, divorces, and marries again — and Churchill follows her through Newport, Paris and the courts to ask what a modern American woman is entitled to want. The author is the American Winston Churchill, so regularly confused with the British statesman that the two men agreed the Englishman would sign himself Winston S. Churchill; in 1910 the American was much the more famous. Twenty-two paintings by Eastman Johnson, Thomas Eakins and others follow the century from Newport parlors to Estes Park, matching the novel's passage through a changing America.
