An elderly bachelor takes in his dead friend's daughter as a ward and then asks her to marry him, knowing what the answer ought to be. Trollope's last completed novel, written at sixty-seven, and one of the shortest things he ever published; nothing in it is settled by an inheritance or a duel, only by two people being honest slightly too late.
