Nietzsche against the philosophers: their systems are confessions, their morality is a herd's, and the will to truth is a will to power in a starched collar. He published it himself in 1886 after his publisher refused it, and sold fewer than a hundred copies. The two hundred and ninety-six numbered sections are meant to be read out of order, and one whole chapter of them is epigrams. Sixty plates of Friedrich and Segantini trace the alpine light Nietzsche's free spirits climb toward, from cloud study to high noon.
