A comic history of New Amsterdam by a fictitious Dutch antiquary whose disappearance Irving advertised in the newspapers to get the book noticed. It worked; the hoax made him famous at twenty-six and gave New York both Knickerbocker and, eventually, Santa Claus arriving by chimney. Its 102 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
