Los capítulos 3, 11 y 12 que integran esta traducción original al español están dedicados, respectivamente, a las causas de la guerra mexicana, el avance sobre la Ciudad de México y la ocupación final de la capital del país en septiembre de 1847. El autor fue protagonista de algunas de las principales batallas de este conflicto y ofrece un testimonio excepcional de cada una de ellas, sorprendentemente detallado considerando que fue redactado casi cuarenta años después de los acontecimientos.
