At a masked ball he was never invited to, Romeo Montague falls instantly for Juliet Capulet — a girl whose family has hated his for as long as anyone can remember. What follows is five days of secret marriage, banished exile, a potion meant to fake death, and a message that arrives one hour too late, ending in a tomb with both families finally, uselessly reconciled. Written around 1595, Romeo and Juliet has defined the language of romantic love and romantic tragedy for over four centuries, and remains Shakespeare's most performed, most quoted, and most adapted play.
