A young Polish count fights under Kościuszko, sees Poland partitioned out of existence, and arrives in London a refugee with nothing — where the English are charmed by him and quite unwilling to help. Porter published this in 1803, eight years after the third partition; it was read across Europe, Kościuszko himself thanked her, and it invented the exiled hero the nineteenth century would use for a hundred years.
