Melville out of his depth on purpose: a table that ticks, a chimney its owner refuses to demolish, a paper mill worked by silent girls, and the essay on Hawthorne that first said an American could be Shakespeare's equal. These sketches ran in the magazines between 1850 and 1856, when Moby-Dick had failed and the magazines were the only money. The comedy is domestic and the anger underneath it is not.
