Britain before Arthur: Uther the king, Igraine married to another man, and Merlin arranging the deception that produces an heir. Deeping wrote it early, in a deliberately archaic manner, and the cruelty of the legend is left in. This edition adds 56 plates of painting, among them works by Alexander Nasmyth, Horatio McCulloch and John William Waterhouse, alongside three restored and coloured illustrations.
