Harvey Cheyne, hijo de un rico hombre de negocios acostumbrado a hacer siempre su voluntad sin que nadie le controle, cae del barco en que viaja con su padre. Es recogido del agua por Manuel, un humilde pescador, que se encuentra faenando con su tripulación. El joven tendrá que pasar dos meses en su velero, el We're Here, rodeado de hombres curtidos poco dispuestos a consentirle el menor capricho. Lo que empieza como una pesadilla para el joven acabará convirtiéndole en un hombre cabal, consciente de la necesidad del esfuerzo y la valentía para superar con éxito las dificultades de la vida.
