Edward Gibbon (8 mai 1737 - 16 janvier 1794) est un historien et homme politique britannique. Il est surtout connu pour son ouvrage Histoire de la décadence et de la chute de l'Empire romain. Dans cet ouvrage encyclopédique, Edward Gibbon retrace l'histoire de la Rome antique entre 180 et 1453 et s'attache à déterminer les causes de sa décadence. De plus, il propose une histoire de l'Europe et de l'Église catholique pour la période s'étendant de 98 à 1590. Dans le chapitre L de son ouvrage, il rédige une biographie de Mahomet sur une centaine de pages. (Wikip.)
