May 1930: Holmes and Watson travel by train across the Continent to Düsseldorf. Even in the compartment, an anxious businessman tells them what the whole city is whispering about. At police headquarters, Detective Superintendent Ernst Gennat awaits them with stacks of files held together by nothing but ribbons: attacks on women and girls, no name, no reliable picture, countless men checked – and not one of them had anything to do with the crimes. The press calls him the "Vampire of Düsseldorf". But Gennat is not looking for a monster; he is looking for a human being who lives unnoticed among everyone else. And Holmes has an idea of his own for how the circle around him might be closed.
