Stories written to fit old sayings: handsome is as handsome does, a stitch in time, better late than never. Alcott produced them for magazines during the years she was supporting her whole family with her pen. The morals are stated in the titles, which frees the stories to be about something else — usually money, and how little of it a woman could earn.
