Tietoa kirjasta

Reality seems perfectly normal—until the moment Ed Fletcher steps onto the sidewalk and watches his familiar office building crumble into lifeless gray ash. What begins as a simple case of running late to work becomes a terrifying glimpse into the machinery behind the world itself—an unseen system of “adjustments” run by mysterious teams who can rewrite the lives, memories, and even bodies of everyone around him. Ed wasn’t supposed to see any of it. Now that he has, the question isn’t whether he understands what’s happening—it’s whether he’ll be allowed to keep existing inside the world he just discovered.

“Adjustment Team” first appeared in 1954 and has become one of Philip K. Dick’s most fascinating explorations of paranoia, control, and the fragile nature of reality. The story later served as the inspiration for the 2011 Matt Damon film The Adjustment Bureau, but the original version is stranger, darker, and far more unsettling in its implications. Dick invites readers to consider a world where free will is merely a tolerated variable—and where one clerical error can expose the truth behind everything.

Philip K. Dick (1928–1982) is one of the most celebrated authors in science fiction, known for stories that question identity, perception, and the boundaries of what we call “real.” His work has inspired dozens of films and series, including Blade Runner, Minority Report, Total Recall, A Scanner Darkly, and The Man in the High Castle. Though he struggled financially during his life, his storytelling reshaped modern sci-fi and continues to influence writers, filmmakers, and philosophers today. If you enjoy thought-provoking, reality-bending fiction, this story is essential.
