William Shakespearen syntymäpäivästä ei ole säilynyt tarkkaa tietoa, mutta hänet kastettiin synnyinkaupungissaan Stratford-on-Avonissa 26.4.1564 oletettavasti muutaman päivän ikäisenä, ja hänen merkkipäivänään pidetään yleisesti huhtikuun 23:tta. Hän syntyi melko varakkaaseen perheeseen ja kävi paikallista latinakoulua ainakin muutaman vuoden. Vuonna 1582, ollessaan 18-vuotias, hän meni naimisiin 26-vuotiaan Anne Hathawayn kanssa. Monilta osin Shakespearen vaiheista ja toimista ei ole täsmällistä tietoa, mutta 1590-luvulla hän alkoi saavuttaa mainetta Lontoon teatteripiireissä.
