Tietoa kirjasta

Alfred Tennyson's Maud (1855) is a dramatic monodrama in verse, tracing the unstable consciousness of a young speaker whose grief, class resentment, erotic idealization, and patriotic fervor converge in psychological crisis. Composed in shifting lyric metres, the poem moves from private obsession to public violence, from garden-song rapture to the rhetoric of war. Its fragmented structure and intense interiority place it at the center of Victorian debates about madness, masculinity, commerce, and empire. Tennyson, already Poet Laureate when Maud appeared, wrote from within a culture unsettled by industrial capitalism, social mobility, and the Crimean War. The poem also reflects his lifelong preoccupation with bereavement, doubt, and mental disturbance, themes deepened by the death of Arthur Hallam and by anxieties within his own family history. Its controversial reception reveals how boldly Tennyson tested the limits of lyric poetry. Maud is recommended to readers interested in Victorian literature at its most ambitious and disquieting. It rewards close attention to voice, rhythm, and irony, offering not a simple romance but a searching study of desire, alienation, and national feeling.
