Tietoa kirjasta

The invaders did not arrive to conquer Earth. They arrived to study it.

They float through cities without warning, observing human beings as if they were insects beneath glass. Their experiments leave bodies twisted into impossible shapes and minds shattered beyond repair. Weapons are useless. Armies fail. Within months the survivors retreat underground, burrowing into the planet to escape.

Peter Karson refuses to accept extinction.

A brilliant scientist and architect of an orbital research station called the Citadel, Peter devises a desperate alternative. If humanity cannot defeat the invaders, then humanity must become something new. He launches into deep space aboard The Avenger, exposing himself and future generations to the mutating power of cosmic radiation.

His mission is simple: create a being powerful enough to defeat the invaders.

Years pass as Peter experiments and destroys the failures. Then one child survives—stronger and more intelligent than any human who has ever lived. Peter believes he has finally found the weapon that can save Earth.

But the mind he has created does not think like a human being.

When the time comes to return home, Peter confronts a terrifying possibility: the creature he raised may judge humanity with the same cold logic as the invaders.

Damon Knight (1922–2002) was an influential science fiction author, editor, and critic whose fiction appeared in Galaxy Science Fiction, Astounding Science Fiction, and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. He wrote novels including Hell’s Pavement, The Sun Saboteurs, and Beyond the Barrier, founded the Science Fiction Writers of America, and helped establish the Nebula Awards. His short fiction combined unsettling ideas with sharp twists, and The Avenger demonstrates Knight’s talent for carrying a seemingly perfect solution toward a disturbing conclusion.
