Tietoa kirjasta

Johnny Edwards thinks he has built the perfect machine. The Edwards Merchandiser can instantly deliver almost anything a customer wants, bypassing shipping delays and turning a simple slot machine into a technological sensation. Then the machine begins making impossible mistakes. Lipstick appears where none was ordered. Strange coins emerge from the return slot. Unknown packages arrive covered in unreadable symbols. At first it feels like a technical disaster. Soon it becomes clear that something far stranger is happening.

On another world, the Martian physicist Zintal is fighting the exact same problem. His machine keeps delivering bizarre objects no Martian could possibly use, along with coins from an alien civilization. Neither side understands what the other is sending. Cigarettes become mysterious chemicals. Playing cards become scientific curiosities. Perfume becomes a biological weapon. Yet through the confusion, irritation, and accidental comedy, both worlds slowly realize they are no longer alone. The Cosmic Jackpot blends sharp humor with classic interplanetary speculation, turning a malfunctioning slot machine into one of the most entertaining first-contact stories of the vintage science fiction era.

George O. Smith built a reputation for combining engineering concepts with fast-moving storytelling and wit. His stories appeared regularly in Astounding Science Fiction and other major magazines throughout the 1940s and 1950s. He is best remembered for his Venus Equilateral stories, which followed communications engineer Don Channing through a sprawling network of space stations and technical crises. The Cosmic Jackpot showcases Smith at his most playful, mixing scientific imagination, cultural misunderstanding, and dry comedy into a story that still feels inventive decades later.
