On a river camping trip with her brother, two of his friends will fall in love with her and compete for her heart. Sylvia will marry one of the men out of passion but will he be the right one for her? The rest of the novel follows Sylvia as she tries to find her place in the world while not losing her own identity. In many ways this tale is Alcott criticising the hasty decisions made in the throes of passion, and the loss of freedom a woman faces when she does marry.
