The Phantom of the Opera, first published in French as a serial in 1909, is a gripping thriller centred on the young Swedish Christine Daaé. Her famous musician father dies, and she is nurtured at the Paris Opera House with his dying promise of a guardian angel of music to guide her. After spending some time at the opera, she begins to hear a voice that eventually teaches her how to sing brilliantly. All is good until Christine's childhood friend Raoul arrives to visit his parents, who are operagoers, and watches Christine when she begins singing effectively on stage. The phantom has fallen in love, but it can only lead to tragedy.
