A sled accident on a December hill puts two friends on their backs for months — one in a bed by the window, one across the road — and the village children arrange their lives around the two invalids. Alcott wrote it in 1880 from an accident to a neighbour's boy, and built the book around the slow work of getting well. Jack's leg and Jill's back mend at different rates, and so do the tempers.
