The Nome King digs a tunnel to Oz while Dorothy brings her aunt and uncle, ruined by the mortgage, to live there for good. Baum meant this to end the series and closed the country off from the world by magic; the readers' letters made him reopen it. The tour of Oz in the middle chapters is his fullest description of the place. Its 94 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
