Über dieses Buch

Mary es la única novela completa de la feminista británica. Narra la trágica historia de las sucesivas amistades de una mujer con una mujer y un hombre. Se publicó en 1788, poco después de su despido fulminante y su decisión de dedicarse a la escritura, una profesión precaria y mal vista para las mujeres en la Gran Bretaña del siglo XVIII.

Inspirada por la idea Rousseau de que los genios se educan a sí mismos, Wollstonecraft eligió a Mary, una heroína racional y autodidacta, como protagonista. Wollstonecraft describe a Mary como independiente y capaz de definir por sí misma la feminidad y el matrimonio. Wollstonecraft también quiso criticar el matrimonio, ya que consideraba que los genios se veían "encadenados" en lugar de enriquecidos por él.

La autora critica también en esta gran novela la sensibilidad del siglo XVIII y sus efectos en las mujeres.
