The Hawaiian volcano goddess and her younger sister, in the chants and hulas that carried the story before it was written down. Emerson was born in Hawaii to missionary parents, spoke the language, and recorded the material from the last generation that had it whole. This edition adds 55 bound plates of painting by Kazimierz Stabrowski, Arthur Streeton, Jules Tavernier and others, plus five in-text illustrations restored and coloured.
